Overtime glooms turn into smiles
When a colleague from thousand miles away webcams you with his naughty faces to buck you up.
When your overtime partner lets you grab the first cab he sees every time, without fail. Such a gentleman.
When a peer suddenly text you and said, "Let me know if help is needed. I will come in and help".
=)
New Phase?
It has been a week since I had reported to work at this new company. Things have been going quite okay if you look at it from the work perspective, it's just that.
I see that my work revolves around Microsoft Excel, Visio and Word nowadays. How boring! I would have to spend hours studying a document and think of how things should be done. The toughest part would be how to convey all these to my fellow developer colleagues. They are pure Chinese guys! But look at it from the other side, this is supposed to be the next step in my career ladder. On my first day, the project manager briefed me on this ongoing project and stated that I would be involved in requirements gathering and analysis as well as the design sections. Honestly, this is a bit more than what I had expected because I was tested more on the development side during the interview. I sat for a while and thought to myself. Am I ready for all these?
Apart from these new things that I will have to cope and learn, I now know many new Chinese words! For e.g. database, database tables, columns, source codes, document and etc. Haha.
Me in Space Suit
Today my colleague and I got the opportunity to visit the company's production floor in the afternoon. I requested this tour to the production floor few months ago as I wanted to understand the flows at the plant so that I could relate them to my working project. And, recently my team leader received the approval from some respective parties. Therefore, we journeyed happily to the production floor.
The pre-requisite to enter the production floor was to dress in a smock
*pokes the Dooodl! on the right sidebar*
That's me in the full-suit with a mask and shoes provided by our tour guide, Miss Jenny. I looked so funny in the smock.
So, we were brought to witness the full process of wafer testing. A wafer is a plate that contains many, many electronic dies on top and wafer testing means the act of testing the dies on the wafer for functional defects before they can be further used to manufacture the real product (i.e. chip in flash memory, camera, etc.). I managed to see how a lot of wafers was first being sent by a customer, which will then be unpacked, examined and sent to machines for testing by test engineers.
The whole tour lasted 1.5 hours. I quickly undressed the smock as soon as I came out of the room. Ahh.. fresh air! Both of us were very satisfied with the tour. We asked many questions. I am now able to relate my programs with the real production flows :-)
I’ve got a faster PC!
Well, just.. one time more RAM. DUH!
I was finally given another old machine with 1GB RAM. Purchase order has been dispatched to the vendor for a 2GB stick. Back to waiting for another 2 more weeks for the RAM to arrive but.. heh, you know when you're really desperate.. you can really feel the difference between a 512MB and a 1GB machine.
Morning joy
Reached office this morning only to find an e-mail from my Head of Department.
I startled.
What have I done?
The e-mail was sent to my reporting manager, carbon-copied to me. He wanted my manager to initiate a RAM upgrade for my machine. So so so touched.
I stayed back in the office yesterday night, was so frustrated with my machine. It took me approximately an hour to finish a task that could be completed in 10 minutes. Yep, my machine runs at 512MB. Mr HOD passed by my cubicle and heard my machine spinning. He stopped and had a short chat with me. He began telling how he refused to work when he was given a slow machine like mine when he first joined, how he firmly told his boss that he would not stay back in the office to finish his work because it was not his efficiency that has made him unproductive.
What a great way to start my working day!
